[3 Episode Rule] Kimetsu no Yaiba, Ufotable is Back

Yo bro, Spring 2019 season has arrived, I want to starting it by giving a review of the first 3 episodes of the anime that attract a lot of attention from the audience this season.  As we know, in the previous season there is a thrill anime with the title Yakusoku no Neverland. This time still in the same manga of Weekly Shounen Jump serialization, we will be presented with anime which also has thrill genre, the title is Kimetsu no Yaiba  , but what distinguishes this time is having more scenes of action, blood, and the use of sharp weapons.  While the Yakusoku no Neverland anime displays more sides that attack psychological characters.

SYNOPSIS
Kamadou Tanjirou lives with his family members in a house on a mountain hill. Tanjirou then went to the nearest village overnight to find extra income for his family.  When he returned home in the morning, Tanjirou was very shocked to know that all his family members had been killed.  Rumors he had heard before said that there were creatures that usually carried out such massacres, they were called "oni", creatures who like to prey on humans and only go out at night. Then, Tanjirou tried to check among his family members, apparently only his younger sister  Nezuko is still saved, but the surprising thing is that her sister has turned into oni, her sister suddenly tries to attack her, Tanjirou is then helped by an oni hunter who happens to pass by, and when her sister wants to be killed, Tanjirou insists that  his sister was forgiven, and also promised to find a way to heal his younger sister, his request was granted, and since that incident the story of Tanjirou and Nezuko who was trying to become a great oni hunter began.

VISUAL
I will start from character design.  The design of the Kimetsu no Yaiba character is very different from Fate/Series and Tales of Zestiria anime, especially in the eyes that usually have a bright shining design that looks very beautiful to look at. This ufotable character design is actually the same character design as the character design on the manga.  Decision making is quite good, because if they try to use their own ufotable character designs that we often see in other anime, then surely not all viewers can accept it.  I think the ufotable has tried its best for not gettin out from design character of the manga.

I will continue to the visual art background of this anime background. The previous ufotable anime takes a lot of background stories in the city, the ufotable anime this time takes more background stories in small villages.  Some of the settings used are forests, rice fields, mountains, rivers, temples and of course traditional Japanese houses.  In the previous ufotable anime Tales of Zestiria actually also took some background stories in the village.  But the Kimetsu no Yaiba takes the background of the story with a timeline that is even further in the past, precisely at the Showa period. Although the background quality of this anime may be more standard than other ufotable anime, but what remains the main weapon of ufotable is mostly blur effects, CG, and coloring. Ufotable-style background is very very unique, you might easily recognize this ufotable-only background, especially in the blur effect, which is very similar to a video camera in the real world.  Starting from the background that is visible from close range and background that are visible from a distance.  Although it's slightly different from the ufotable anime background design in general, it doesn't mean I don't like it.  I actually don't attach much importance to visual art in an anime.  As long as the story is interesting, accompanied by good sound, in my opinion it's enough.
Then in character movements, 3D CG, weather effects, and lighting which also in my opinion don't need to be questioned and explained again, ufotable is pro when working on it. The work might be the longest compared to other studios, but the results of course always make the audience amazed.  The thing that we can't find in the first 3 episodes of this anime might be the effect of dust floating on a light like the usual ufotable anime.

SOUND
First we start from the opening song.  I was surprised when I first heard that LiSA sing the opening song of this anime. "What?  LiSA?  Singing Thrill anime songs?" I don't think it will be suitable, but fortunately this anime also displays a lot of the action rather than the thriller.  That's what makes LiSA fit in with this anime. With a rather slow tempo at the beginning of the song and return quickly when approaching the middle of the end of the song.  It's like reminding me of the LiSA song in the previous ufotable anime, namely fate/zero which also has a melow rock tone.  I believe this song is a long single prepared specifically for Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Then in background music.  Do you know what makes this anime creepy? Its hearing a traditional ceremonial song with a woman's high pitch that sometimes playing on BGM.  I have heard it before, it was like the BGM of Shinsekai Yori and Kara no Kyoukai anime. A very precise decision is made by ufotable.  Because the storyline in the showa era is still very thick with traditional ceremonies.  Adding a very tense impression when meeting with 'Oni' while their preying humans. Last one, the fighting scene might be more blend between traditional drum music and violin. That part is actually not too special because the BGM is still in the standard of music in general.

STORY

Something interesting always happens on the first episode. This is usually what always happens in every weekly shounen jump manga adaptation.  The main protagonist also usually has his own unique abilities.  Kamadou Tanjirou has a strong sense of smell from ordinary humans, with that sense of smell he can feel dangerous situations around him. The protagonist is fortunately not too serious personality, meaning that he can still give his audience the humor.  It could make the audience more interested.
In terms of story, letting Tanjurou's sister, Nezuko, still be alive is the right decision.  If his sister dies first, the Tanjirou's presence in this anime will weaken.  Because he doesn't have anything to motivate their lives.  It will only be an ordinary character who only has revenge on Oni.  Whereas if his sister is still alive, Tanjirou will not feel lonely, have someone to protect, and can try to find new friends on his journey.
This anime story has several similarities to other thriller anime.  First, this creature called oni preys on humans so they can stay alive.  This is very similar to the ghoul concept in the Tokyo Ghoul anime, what distinguishes it is that this oni creature cannot be exposed to sunlight, its body can regenerate itself if it is injured.  While ghouls can be exposed to sunlight, they cannot regenerate.  Second, the Oni creature can only be killed in a certain way, that is, using special metal on the sword of the owner.  Very similar to Titan in the anime Attack on Titan which can only be killed in certain ways.  Then, Kamadou Tanjirou entered the hunter forces after his family members were killed by Oni.  Very much like Eren Yeager who entered the Exploration Corps after his family members were killed by Titan.
Ufotable since being left behind by Fate / Series looks like it has been sluggish, many of the new anime titles are not well received by the audience.  The ufotable strategy is to adapt anime from well-known games.  They have tried it twice and both have ended in failure.  In 2019 this ufotable seems to have really learned from the past, ufotable has no longer tried to adapt anime from a game, but adapted directly from a manga that already has a big name.  But in adapting manga that already has a big name is actually a very heavy responsibility.  The audience will compare whether this adaptation will be as tense as the one in the manga.  If you just lose a few important elements, then the ufotable anime will end up like the two previous titles, namely God Eater and Tales of Zestiria.  But it looks like the ufotable preparation is really mature.  Errors made ufotable like the two previous anime, namely God Eater with strangely visuals, or Tales of Zestiria are visually perfect but have an uninteresting story.  This has been very well managed by the ufotable.  Visual is okay, the story is also interesting, just stay consistent in doing it.

 OVERALL

I might not be in a hurry to give value to this anime, because the anime still hasn't finished airing.  Ufotable cannot be missed.  Something could happen in upcoming episodes, such as airing recap episodes or delaying the release of the last episode.  I'm just hoping they keep working their best, and don't disappoint the audience.
In terms of stories, even though it is in the action genre, this anime must continue to develop more on how creepy oni creature really are.  Do not let the creepy side disappear so that people more days are just considered this anime nothing more than anime that highlights the action side, while the thriller side does not. I don't expect the ufotable to work too optimally from the visual art side.  Just keep maintaining visual art like that.  Because good visuals will only make ufotable work gettin very long, the audience definitely want the release to be faster right?
